American Artillery Officer's Eagle Head Sword, circa 1820
American Artillery Officers Eagle Head Sword, circa 1820. Elaborate gilded brass mounts with a "Ketland" style eagle head. Similar hilt pictured in "The American Eagle-Pommel Swords, Circa 1794 to 1830" by Mowbray. See page 105, Plate 12F. Knuckle guard features an eagle with a shield under a panel containing 10 stars. The gilding shows slight edge wear. Reeded bone or ivory grip. The back of the blade has what appears to be the number 11. The right side of the blade is marked "Warranted" and is decorated with an engraved and gilded Liberty Cap and an eagle with "E Pluribus Unum" in a banner. Left side has a panoply of arms, a floral decoration and a sheaf of arrows surmounted by a feathered hat. The blade retains over 50% of its original blue, with remainder a gray color. Leather scabbard decorated with impressed designs with gilded brass mounts. The scabbard is solid with no breaks but it shows its age and must be treated with care.
