Landsknecht Dagger, ca. 1550 scabbard with a later dagger

Landsknecht Dagger. This a composite piece with an original 1550 period scabbard and a latter dagger. The scabbard is iron decorated with cut out designs backed with fabric. Likely red velvet which has faded and lies now brownish with out the nap. There is a grooved ring around the top and a similar decoration at the tip. Small rings are attached to the top section of the scabbard. Forged iron hanger attached with two original chains to the top. Replaced wood core cut to hold restored dagger. Dark iron color with no rust. The dagger is a good copy of a period piece with iron mounts and guard decorated with incised lines. Grip is wood carved with a spiral design. Good aged patina. Very heavy triangular blade. Certainly capable of piercing chain mail. Over all length with scabbard on is 16 1 1/2 inches. Dagger is 14 1/2 inches with a 9 1/2 inch blade.

The scabbard is a rare find and deserves to be in a good collection. Who knows? There may be a period dagger out there waiting for a scabbard.
