Flintlock Musketoon by R. Watkins, London gunmaker, 1710 to1740

Flintlock Musketoon by R. Watkins, a London gunmaker who made flintlock pistols and muskets for the army and navy.  Worked 1710 to 1740.  This gun probably intended for naval use, since it has Sea Service trigger guard and a flat butt plate.  Walnut stock with brass mounts.  Side plate and escutcheon similar to those used on the 1st Model Brown Bess.  OA 39 inches with a 23 inch iron barrel with a 1 1/2 inch octagonal breech changing to round with a 2 1/2 inch muzzle flare.  London proofed with a makers stamp.   Original ramrod.   7 inch lock inscribed R Watkins.  Unusual brass but with top inletted into butt.  Carving around the barrel tang similar to Brown Bess.  Excellent condition with original varnish on the stock.  Barrel has a dark brown patina.  Lock is gray iron.  Shows little use.  Very rare Revolutionary War period Musketoon.  See Neumann #M110.
